We are thrilled to invite you to our annual celebration of life on our watery planet! Mark your calendars for April 19 and tell your friends! Join us for music, dance, fish, mud and much, much more.


Cost: Full day of arts, crafts, music, fishy and muddy programs, and more.... is FREE.


Three, two-hour Discovery Voyages on San Francisco Bay aboard our 90-foot research vessel, the Robert G. Brownlee cost $40/adult, $20 child (ages 5-12). These trips often sell out in advance, so book today!!




























Canoe Paddle in Redwood Creek

Saturday, July 19   9am ~ 2pm

Join us for a leisurely family paddle in our fleet of canoes guided by our expert naturalist instructors. No experience necessary, and we provide all of the necessary equipment. We will explore the local flora and fauna of Bair Island, a rare example of an undevelopped wetland ecosystem. A recent paddle offered a bonanza of bird sightings - over 16 species in two hours!! 5yrs or older.

Earth Day on the Bay Discovery Ecovoyage

Climb aboard our floating classroom for an exploration of the San Francisco Bay like no other! Our 90' Research Vessel the Robert G. Brownleeand promises you will remember this trip for a lifetime!


After an introduction to this magical estuary, you can help us set a net to sample what fish are swimming through the waters below. We'll help you identify and even touch the fish we see... will we catch a shark, bat ray or any of over one hundred other surprising fish we've seen?? Then we pull up a bottom sample and see what all that mud has hidden inside. Last but not least, we'll peer into the world of plankton, the engine that drives the whole ecosystem!


Must be at least 5 years old to attend, and ALL children must be accompanied and supervised by an adult. Closed-toe shoes required.




This event is $40 per adult , $20 per child (ages 5-12)

Marsh & Beach Exploration

Saturday, May 10    10am ~ 1pm




Come join us as we explore the secrets of sandy beach habitat, then move inland through the marshland and learn about the birds and plant life specially adapted to this environment.

Low Tide Walk

Saturday, April 26          2:15pm ~ 4:45pm


MSI takes to the tidepools for a treasure hunt of nature's beautiful intertidal secrets. We'll spend our time taking advantage of the low tide to reach the outer edges of Pillar Point, while taking in spectacular vantages as we slowly retreat to shore. Will we find crabs, sea stars, eels and octopus!? This is a great all-ages, family event. Space tends to fill up for these events quickly, so please RSVP soon.

Whale Watching

Saturday, May 3          8:45pm ~ 12:00pm


Join MSI on a very special whale watching adventure! We will set sail from Half Moon Bay in search of migrating gray whales, humback whales, blue whales, dolphins, porpoises, seabirds and other majestic marine wildlife in their home waters. A great family outing! .

Shark Day

MSI loves sharks! Our special Shark Day invites one and all to learn about these amazing creatures, from the Great Whites that swim just off our ocean shores, to the gentle Leopard Sharks that are common in our Bay.We will be feeding and touching our local Leopard Sharks in our teaching aquarium, and viewing information about the vital role of these top predators around our world's oceans.

Elkhorn Slough Safari

Saturday, June 21          9:30am ~ 11:30am


Join MSI and our friends at Elkhorn Slough Safari in Moss Landing to learn first-hand about one of California’s most spectacular estuaries. Nationally recognized and protected as an Estuarine Research Reserve, Elkhorn Slough is naturally bountiful as a migratory bird flyway, otter and seal habitat and home to thousands of other plant and animals. A great family outing!

MSI Event Cancellation and refund policy: For a full refund, we ask our guests to cancel their registrations with a minimum of one weeks notice. This allows for families on waiting lists to register and adequately plan their calendars. Please note our events still take place during rain or shine including our Discovery Voyages unless deemed a safety issue by the ship's Captain. Should MSI cancel an event for any reason you will be notified via the contact information provided through registration and be issued a full refund.
