Bat Ray

Myliobatis Californica

Bat rays are spread out from Oregon to the Gulf of Mexico. They are found in large groups that can number up to a thousand, or can be found swimming alone. They can grow up to about 6' across. A ray that is 2' is most likely 3-4 years; a ray that is 3' is about 7 years, and a ray that is 4' is about 12 years. Males will live to around 6 years, and mature when they reach 2'. Females, however, live to at least 24 years, and mature at 3'.
How to Identify: The Bat Ray has dark brown-black coloring. Their heads are large, and raised slightly. They have a long skinny tail, which has a stinger at its base.
