Black Surfperch

Embiotoca jacksoni

The Black Surfperch can grow up to about 15.5'. They live anywhere between Northern California to Central Baja California. They will group into tight schools during mating seasons, but otherwise are found in smaller schools. They are mostly found near the shore in kelp forests or off of tide-pools.
How to Identify: Black surfperch have thick lips, and a sort of "mustache", a darker coloring above the lips. They also have enlarged scales that appear between the pectoral and ventral fins.
