California Halibut
Paralichthys californicus
| The California halibuts live anywhere between British Columbia to Baja California and the Gulf of California. The juveniles live in the estuaries and bays, though they will move out to open seas after maturing. The halibuts can grow to about 5', and the females will live to about 30 years old. Either eye will migrate, so halibuts are both right and left sided. |
| How to Identify: California halibuts have a darker patterning on one side, and a white, very ale bottom side. The Halibuts can alter their shading depending on their surroundings. They have very large teeth, and can have white dots which occasionally will disappear. Their lateral line curves over their pectoral fin, a trait that sets them apart from all other flatfish. |
