Northern Anchovy

Engraulis mordox

The Northern Anchovy is one of the more common fishes in the bay. They will live from the surface to a depth of about 1,000 ft, and from the shore to about 300 miles from the coast. In the fall and winter they are found in large schools; however, in the summer they are mostly scattered. They can reach about 9" in length, but few grow past 7". Anchovies generally live to about 5 years old. Anchovies also make up about 98% of live bait catch in the San Francisco bay.
How to Identify: The Northern Anchovy is a long and skinny fish; the top snout overhangs the jaw, and the mouth extends past the eyes. There is also greenish coloring on top, with a bright silver stripe on the side.
