Fish Tracks....

Think it's difficult to track a deer, raccoon or mountain lion? Try tracking fish! Luckily, MSI is in the best position to do exactly this utilizing our vast amount of data collected over our 40 year history of fish monitoring in San Francisco Bay. Combining this data with emerging Geographic Information System (GIS) tools, there are new and exciting ways to teach about the varied fish populations swimming along our shores.

Below is an example of how our fish data could be integrated with GIS tools to give students a virtual interpretation of their Discovery Voyage with us. Once back in the classroom after a voyage, students could travel along the exact route of their trip using GIS tools, see the exact place of their fish trawls, and examine GIS-referenced pictures and data of the fish they caught. This could then serve as a launching pad for further examinations of the fish they had direct experiences with, utilizing resources such as our 40 year database of fish populations, web-based field guides, and more.

If you are interested in learning more, or contributing your time, expertise or energy to this project, please contact Aaron to get involved. Our next fish data training will be held on Saturday, September 25th, from 2pm ~ 5pm.

Massive Mural

Eight years ago, MSI Summer Marine Campers created a tile mural project of San Francisco Bay. Recently, we enlisted the help of Oracle Volunteers to help us reassemble this fantastic puzzle and mount it on a giant frame. It was tremendously rewarding to see this incredibly creative project, initiated by MSI's Stephanie Burns, come together into its final form. Next time you come to MSI, make sure you check it out! The tiles form a beautiful image of San Francisco Bay, surrounded by a sea of marine-themed images. A big thanks again to Oracle for providing another quality team of volunteers - this one was our biggest challenge yet!
