MSI Recent Events

Dr. Robert Ballard, explorer extraordinaire, gave an inspiring talk in April at the Lesher Center for the Arts with the Marine Science Institute as the non-profit partner for the event.  We were extremely grateful for the opportunity to both listen to and meet the famed ocean guru.

Before he launched into his talk, the audience watched a special short video about the Marine Science Institute and the importance of the work we do.  (The video can be seen here).  Dr. Ballard supports initiatives that encourage our next generation to explore the oceans more, and spent the first section of his presentation detailing the importance of organizations like MSI – and that it was indeed a program very similar that steered Dr. Ballard on his own road to discovery.  “It is extremely important to get students in the field while they are young, to adventure out away from the shore, and give them the tools to look below the surface.”

“The children in middle school today will explore more of the Earth than has been ever explored before” ~ Dr. Bob Ballard        His road led him to be a lead researcher at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, discover the Titanic, Bismark, dee sea vents and countless other maritime marvels. He is at the helm of two recent initiatives which are supporting his vision: the recently created Inner Space Center at the University of Rhode Island; and the even more recent launch of his new research ship, E/V Nautilus.  Together, with advances in telepresence technologies, they promise to greatly enhance our abilities to see & share the many undiscovered wonders of the oceans.    MSI would like to thank everyone for making our 2010 Earth Day on the Bay another wonderful success! Thanks to our hard-working volunteers from Oracle & MSI's volunteer base, everything went smoothly. Our musicians totally rocked, with the Banana Slug String Band getting the tots jumping, and Casey Neill & the Norway Rats dazzling us bigger kids. Earthcapades Environmental Vaudeville awed two packed audiences with their talent-riddled mix of juggling, joking, singing, stilt-walking and unicycling. Kilohana treated event-goers to many paddles in their outrigger canoes, and Keolalaulani O'Lapa O'Lapa danced with great beauty to an appreciative crowd.

Special thanks to documentary director Ron Blatman, who gave everyone the opportunity to delve deeper into the history and present pressing issues surrounding us with his documentary Saving the Bay. Please SEE THIS MOVIE if you have not already, and check out the incredible wealth of online educational resources!

Our staff put in long days, and it was a treat to see several former staff members of MSI come by to help and say hello. We sent dozens of people off to see Disney's new film 'Oceans', and others home with terrific raffle prizes. We hope that if this was your first introduction to MSI, you gained an appreciation for what we do, and what we are trying to achieve. The Bay and Ocean are vitally important to us all, and the stronger we can build that bond, the brighter our future will be.
