Green Crab Monitoring

The green crab is one of the many invertebrates to recently invade San Francisco Bay. MSI began monitoring the abundance of the European green crab (Carcinus maenas) in May of 1995. The Institute is contributing to the body of knowledge on Green Crab proliferation and growth by noting the carapace size, sex, and location of collected crabs. Sites for the study are the open water and shoreline habitats of South San Francisco Bay. We sample using an otter trawl out on the Bay and a beach seine used at MSI's beach site. Live crabs are maintained at the Institute in a display aquarium. Please contact MSI for more information.
