Bair Island

The island directly across from the Marine Science Institute, Bair Island, was purchased in 1997 by a Pennisula conservation group. The group that purchased the island, the Pennisula Open Space Trust, purchased the 1,626 acre area from a property group based out of Tokyo. Because Bair Island is the largest piece of unprotected wetland left in the South Bay, the purchase of the island is very important to the local ecology of South San Francisco Bay. Numerous South Bay species thrive on Bair Island, including three species presently listed as endangered (California clapper rail, California least tern, and salt marsh harvest mouse).
