Volunteer and Internship Programs
2002-2003
Education Volunteers
Learn about the biology and ecology of local marine species while assisting MSI instructors during education programs--at our site in Redwood City, at Shoreline Park in Mountain View and at the Pillar Point Tidepools. Additionally, volunteers may help with the language translation of our species identification keys from English to Spanish. We provide all the training and ask that you commit to one program per month for one year. Become a part of our dedicated group of educators!
Monitoring Volunteers
Monitoring volunteers work to research fish populations in the South San Francisco Bay. In this role, you will collect Ichthyology and Hydrology data while aboard MSI's research vessel during the Discovery Voyage program. You may also serve as a Teaching Assistant and work with the 5th-12th graders at the Ichthyology station. Coursework in science is helpful but not necessary for this position! We provide all the training and ask that you commit to twelve voyages over a one year period. Voyages leave primarily from Redwood City every weekday from 8:00-12:00 and 1:00 - 5:00. Volunteers between the ages of 12 and 16 are welcome with a chaperone.
Marine Camp Volunteer
Marine Camp is nine weeks of summer fun. Discover Bay and Ocean environments alongside camp counselors, instructors and young marine biologists. Obtain valuable marine science knowledge while promoting hands-on, discovery based learning to youth. Summer camp volunteers must be able to commit to two weeks of camp plus attend a training day the week of June 16th. Bay, Ocean, Naturalist and Advanced camp volunteers must be 16 years or older. Junior camp volunteers must be 12 years or older. Please visit the Marine Camp portion of our website to view camp dates and descriptions. If interested please send a cover letter stating your goals and summer schedule to Dennis Rogers, Land Program Coordinator at dennis@sfbaymsi.org or 500 Discovery Parkway Redwood City, CA 94063.
