The Marine Science Institute offers the following volunteer positions.

Fish Data Collection Internship: Research

     Collect fish aboard our 90-foot research vessel, the Brownlee. Identify, count and measure San Francisco Bay fish in a fun, educational environment. Data collected becomes part of an important 40-year-old database tracking fluctuations in fish populations in South San Francisco Bay. This is a great opportunity for those who are interested in gaining valuable scientific data-collection experience. Must be 16 years of age or older. After a brief training, volunteer can sign up to join on any voyage being undertaken with our Discovery Voyage education programs (which during the school year typically happens twice a day, Monday through Saturday.

Marketing and Social Media Intern

The Marine Science Institute (MSI) has openings for marketing and social media internships to run campaigns for our annual Earth Day of the Bay celebration, summer Marine Camp and educational outreach to schools, teachers and parent groups. Minimum age requirment is 18. Marketing intern will gain hands-on experience applying marketing skills to reach company goals and objectives while sharing knowledge with staff. Interns should have experience with social media platforms and have excellent written and oral skills. This is the perfect position for students in media and marketing who need real world experience. These positions require a commitment of 6-8 hours a week for 4-8 month increments.

Graphic Design Intern

Presenting visually stunning and appealing materials is important for any brand. Graphic design volunteers develop visual components and complete products for use in marketing, publishing, and our web presence. Their work may be applied for general use as well as for specific projects.  

Experience with photo-editing and graphic design programs such as Photoshop and Illustrator required. Volunteers may use a company computer (equipped with Adobe Acrobat Creative Suite) or work on their own device.

Web Design Intern

Web design volunteers will work with our staff to give Marine Science Institute a make-over and present a more up-to-date, polished, and user-friendly website. We need your help for a website re-design, including researching platforms and templates.

Volunteers should feel comfortable with web navigation and should have an eye for visual presentation. Experience with coding or working with web design templates is a plus, but not required.

Photography Volunteer

Build your portfolio and capture moments at public events hosted by Marine Science Institute. This is a unique opportunity to practice a variety of styles of photography including portraits, indoor, outdoor, wildlife and action. We welcome volunteers to join us for single events or to attend regularly to document exciting activities such as tide pooling, touching sharks, or fishing on our ship.

We prefer that volunteers use their own cameras and share their photos in a timely manner.

Aquarium Assistant

Assist our Aquarist in carrying out the basic daily operations of the aquarium. This is a great opportunity to gain animal husbandry experience, become familiarized with local marine animals, learn how to monitor brackish and salt water quality, and help keep all of our animals healthy. Must be 18 years of age or older. After an initial training, volunteers are asked to commit to a 3 hour shift once a week, for 12 weeks. Marine Camp Volunteer

Do you love marine science? Working with children? Playing games? Doing arts and crafts? Taking photos? Become a summer camp volunteer! Minimum age requirment is 16*.
MSI Summer Marine Camp is a week-long day camp offered for nine weeks during the summer. Volunteers are critical to help camp run smoothly. They assist instructors and counselors, and are an important support for camper. Marine camp is a fun and exciting opportunity for volunteers to enjoy learning and teaching marine science. They get to participate in all of the camp activities and field trips, while being a friend and role model for campers. We are also looking for photography volunteers! These positions require a commitment of 8-9 hours a day for a week during the summer.

We will be accepting volunteer applications for our 2015 Summer Marine Camp starting Spring of 2015!

Applications will be reviewed beginning May 1st, 2015!!
