Marine Science Camp Sessions and Dates!

Summer is a few months away but registration for summer camps is heating up! We hope you will join us at Marine Science Camp this summer for hands-on marine science lessons, interaction with live animals, and adventures into local marine habitats. Camp sessions for entering K-12th grades are available June 10-August 9. All camps run Monday-Friday except July 1-5 which is shortened and prorated due to the 4th of July holiday.

Registration opens Monday February 4th at 8 am! To find out more click the camp title you are interested in to be taken to that camp's web page.

Plankton Pioneers (entering grades K-1st):

Session options: June 10-14, June 17-21, July 1-5, July 22-26, Aug. 5-9

Introduces campers to different aspects of marine science. Each day at our site is themed with hands-on activities, animal touching and a fun craft that is related to the theme of the day. During one camp day, campers are true marine biologists aboard our research vessel and practice animal collecting from the Bay!

Wetland Explorers (entering grades 2nd-5th):

Session options: June 24-28, July 8-12, July 15-19, July 29-Aug. 2

This camp focuses on the San Francisco Bay estuary’s animals and habitats including marshes, sloughs and mudflats. Campers will discover the science and creatures of their own backyards through hands-on activities and interactions with live animals. Campers journey to beautiful habitats around the Bay on field trips and a voyage aboard our ship.

Ocean Explorers (entering grades 2nd-5th):

Session options: June 10-14, June 17-21, June 24-28, July 1-5, July 8-12, July 15-19, July 22-26, July 29-Aug. 2, Aug. 5-9

Ocean Explorers discuss coastal California and the world’s ocean. Hands-on activities put campers in contact with live animals and science in action. Field trips to the coast and aboard our research vessel allow them to investigate ocean habitats.

Naturalists (returning campers entering grades 4th-5th):

Session options: July 22-26, Aug. 5-9

Campers who have previously attended Ocean Explorers or Wetland Explorers & are ready to delve a little deeper will enjoy this fast-paced camp. Campers will learn how to be naturalists and have fun studying marine science research methods in both the wetland and oceanic habitats. Exciting field trips and a trip on our research vessel take students behind the scenes as marine biologists.

Underwater Investigators (entering 6th-8th grades):

Session options: June 24-28, July 8-12, July 15-19, July 29-Aug. 2

This year's theme is Biomimicry. Biomimicry (“bio”=life, and “mimic”=to imitate) is a way of learning from nature in action and using that knowledge to inspire new ideas. Through the course of their camp week, campers will learn how engineers often imitate nature in the design of innovative new products and solutions to human problems. Their week-long information gathering by land, boat and canoe will culminate in an activity aboard the R/V Robert G. Brownlee in which they will use biomimicry to design a self-sustaining research vessel inspired by adaptations investigated during the week. Our middle school age camp even has an overnight aboard the ship!

Project Discovery (entering 9th-12th grades):

Session option: June 17-21

Geared toward high school students who want to study marine biology in the field. They have an action packed week starting with animal sampling and data collection aboard the Research Vessel, followed by 4 days of camping along the coastline near Half Moon Bay.

Field trips for Wetland Explorers, Ocean Explorers, Naturalists and Underwater Investigators camps will be announced on the website in coming weeks. Stay tuned for updates on all things Marine Science Camp!

Registration opens February 4th at 8 am.
