Marine Science Camp Sneak Peek - Ocean Explorers (2nd-5th grades)

The countdown to summer has begun! This week’s Marine Science Camp sneak peek is at Ocean Explorers camp for entering 2nd-5th graders.

Ocean Explorers camp for entering 2nd-5th graders examines the habitats and animals found in the world oceans, with emphasis on those found off the nearby Pacific coastline. Wind, sunlight, tides and other physical factors make California’s coastline of the most complex and highly productive ecosystems. The highly varied shoreline and off-shore habitats house diverse populations of marine algae and animals with incredible adaptations for survival.

During a week of Ocean Explorers, campers will learn about marine habitats and touch live animals from the MSI aquarium and while at off-site excursions. They will explore the rocky shore, sandy beach, kelp forest, open ocean and deep sea habitats through hands-on activities while on-site at MSI, and will also venture to coastal field trip sites to see animal adaptations in action in their habitat! Campers will embrace the communities along our nearby coastline, learn about current threats to oceanic health, and explore how humans can positively impact the world ocean. A week of Ocean Explorers is filled with live animal interaction and themed hands-on lessons and games tailored to each grade level.

Each week of Ocean Explorers includes:

  • Hands-on activities from 8:30 am-3:00 pm Monday through Friday

  • 2 days at our site to study live animals from our aquarium and to engage in other science projects both indoors and outside

  • 2 days at local field trip sites (reached by CYO school bus) that feature different habitats. 2020 field trip locations are still TBD. Past field trip locations include Pillar Point, Bean Hollow State Beach, Greater Farallones National Marine Sanctuary Visitor Center, Dunes Beach, Francis Beach, Pescadero Marsh and more.

  • 1 day aboard our ship that includes fishing, studying plankton, sampling mud, and learning about nautical navigation

  • 2 staff plus a volunteer for every 16 campers

  • Flexible curriculum that engages multiple learning styles
