Marine Science Camp Sneak Peek - Plankton Pioneers (K-1st grades)
The countdown to summer has begun! This week’s Marine Science Camp sneak peek is
at Plankton Pioneers camp for entering K-1st graders.
Plankton Pioneers introduces your budding biologist to the wonders of the amazing local marine life in the San Francisco Bay and in our world’s ocean. Campers entering kindergarten through 1st grade will learn about marine habitats through fun-filled hands-on activities, touch live marine animals and take part in themed crafts, games, songs and stories. These activities spark curiosity about nature and will inspire campers to be excitement about local marine life!
Each day of camp has a different theme, enabling campers to explore diverse habitats and animals. Daily themes include:
“Magnificent Marshes” (touch live fish and invertebrates from the San Francisco Bay)
“Outstanding Ocean” (learn about marine mammals and touch juvenile leopard sharks)
“Pacific Party” (touch live fish and invertebrates from our rocky coastline)
“Super Scientists” (learn how to be scientists while examining sessile invertebrates attached to the docks, fishing off the beach using a seine net, and participating in a scavenger hunt to learn about the local marsh).
Campers will also spend a day aboard our 90-foot research vessel surveying animals from the San Francisco Bay! This ship was designed specifically for students to help capture fish, invertebrates and plankton using real scientific equipment.
Each day will expand on the previous day's information. Key concepts explored throughout the week include differences between marine habitats, food webs, adaptations and life strategies of organisms found within each habitat.
Week-long camps are available. Camps run Monday through Friday select weeks from 8:30 am-1:00 pm. Extended care is available until 5:30 pm. Visit our Scholarships page to apply for financial assistance.
